ਅਸੰਖ ਭਗਤ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥ असंख भगत गुण गिआन वीचार ॥ Asaʼnkẖ bẖagaṯ guṇ gi▫ān vīcẖār. Countless devotees contemplate the Wisdom and Virtues of the Lord.

ਅਸੰਖ ਸਤੀ ਅਸੰਖ ਦਾਤਾਰ ॥ असंख सती असंख दातार ॥ Asaʼnkẖ saṯī asaʼnkẖ ḏāṯār. Countless the holy, countless the givers.

ਅਸੰਖ ਸੂਰ ਮੁਹ ਭਖ ਸਾਰ ॥ असंख सूर मुह भख सार ॥ Asaʼnkẖ sūr muh bẖakẖ sār. Countless heroic spiritual warriors, who bear the brunt of the attack in battle (who with their mouths eat steel).

ਅਸੰਖ ਮੋਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ਤਾਰ ॥ असंख मोनि लिव लाइ तार ॥ Asaʼnkẖ mon liv lā▫e ṯār. Countless silent sages, vibrating the String of His Love.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਵਣ ਕਹਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ कुदरति कवण कहा वीचारु ॥ Kuḏraṯ kavaṇ kahā vīcẖār. How can Your Creative Potency be described?

ਵਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ਏਕ ਵਾਰ ॥ वारिआ न जावा एक वार ॥ vāri▫ā na jāvā ek vār. I cannot even once be a sacrifice to You.

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਕਾਰ ॥ जो तुधु भावै साई भली कार ॥ Jo ṯuḏẖ bẖāvai sā▫ī bẖalī kār. Whatever pleases You is the only good done,

ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥੧੭॥ तू सदा सलामति निरंकार ॥१७॥ Ŧū saḏā salāmaṯ nirankār. ||17|| You, Eternal and Formless One. ||17||

ਅਸੰਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧ ਘੋਰ ॥ असंख मूरख अंध घोर ॥ Asaʼnkẖ mūrakẖ anḏẖ gẖor. Countless fools, blinded by ignorance.

ਅਸੰਖ ਚੋਰ ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ ॥ असंख चोर हरामखोर ॥ Asaʼnkẖ cẖor harāmkẖor. Countless thieves and embezzlers.

ਅਸੰਖ ਅਮਰ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਜੋਰ ॥ असंख अमर करि जाहि जोर ॥ Asaʼnkẖ amar kar jāhi jor. Countless impose their will by force.

ਅਸੰਖ ਗਲਵਢ ਹਤਿਆ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥ असंख गलवढ हतिआ कमाहि ॥ Asaʼnkẖ galvadẖ haṯi▫ā kamāhi. Countless cut-throats and ruthless killers.

ਅਸੰਖ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ असंख पापी पापु करि जाहि ॥ Asaʼnkẖ pāpī pāp kar jāhi. Countless sinners who keep on sinning.

ਅਸੰਖ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜੇ ਫਿਰਾਹਿ ॥ असंख कूड़िआर कूड़े फिराहि ॥ Asaʼnkẖ kūṛi▫ār kūṛe firāhi. Countless liars, wandering lost in their lies.

ਅਸੰਖ ਮਲੇਛ ਮਲੁ ਭਖਿ ਖਾਹਿ ॥ असंख मलेछ मलु भखि खाहि ॥ Asaʼnkẖ malecẖẖ mal bẖakẖ kẖāhi. Countless wretches, eating filth as their ration.

ਅਸੰਖ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥ असंख निंदक सिरि करहि भारु ॥ Asaʼnkẖ ninḏak sir karahi bẖār. Countless slanderers, carrying the weight of their stupid mistakes on their heads.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ नानकु नीचु कहै वीचारु ॥ Nānak nīcẖ kahai vīcẖār. Nanak describes the state of the lowly.

ਵਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ਏਕ ਵਾਰ ॥ वारिआ न जावा एक वार ॥ vāri▫ā na jāvā ek vār. I cannot even once be a sacrifice to You.

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਕਾਰ ॥ जो तुधु भावै साई भली कार ॥ Jo ṯuḏẖ bẖāvai sā▫ī bẖalī kār. Whatever pleases You is the only good done,

ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥੧੮॥ तू सदा सलामति निरंकार ॥१८॥ Ŧū saḏā salāmaṯ nirankār. ||18|| You, Eternal and Formless One. ||18||

ਅਸੰਖ ਨਾਵ ਅਸੰਖ ਥਾਵ ॥ असंख नाव असंख थाव ॥ Asaʼnkẖ nāv asaʼnkẖ thāv. Countless names, countless places.

ਅਗੰਮ ਅਗੰਮ ਅਸੰਖ ਲੋਅ ॥ अगम अगम असंख लोअ ॥ Agamm agamm asaʼnkẖ lo▫a. Inaccessible, unapproachable, countless celestial realms.

ਅਸੰਖ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ असंख कहहि सिरि भारु होइ ॥ Asaʼnkẖ kėhahi sir bẖār ho▫e. Even to call them countless is to carry the weight on your head.

ਅਖਰੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਖਰੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥ अखरी नामु अखरी सालाह ॥ Akẖrī nām akẖrī sālāh. From the Word, comes the Naam; from the Word, comes Your Praise.

ਅਖਰੀ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੀਤ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹ ॥ अखरी गिआनु गीत गुण गाह ॥ Akẖrī gi▫ān gīṯ guṇ gāh. From the Word, comes spiritual wisdom, singing the Songs of Your Glory.

ਅਖਰੀ ਲਿਖਣੁ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਬਾਣਿ ॥ अखरी लिखणु बोलणु बाणि ॥ Akẖrī likẖaṇ bolaṇ bāṇ. From the Word, come the written and spoken words and hymns.

ਅਖਰਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਖਾਣਿ ॥ अखरा सिरि संजोगु वखाणि ॥ Akẖrā sir sanjog vakẖāṇ. From the Word, comes destiny, written on one's forehead.

ਜਿਨਿ ਏਹਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ जिनि एहि लिखे तिसु सिरि नाहि ॥ Jin ehi likẖe ṯis sir nāhi. But the One who wrote these Words of Destiny-no words are written on His Forehead.

ਜਿਵ ਫੁਰਮਾਏ ਤਿਵ ਤਿਵ ਪਾਹਿ ॥ जिव फुरमाए तिव तिव पाहि ॥ Jiv furmā▫e ṯiv ṯiv pāhi. As He ordains, so do we receive.

ਜੇਤਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇਤਾ ਨਾਉ ॥ जेता कीता तेता नाउ ॥ Jeṯā kīṯā ṯeṯā nā▫o. The created universe is the manifestation of Your Name.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਥਾਉ ॥ विणु नावै नाही को थाउ ॥ viṇ nāvai nāhī ko thā▫o. Without Your Name, there is no place at all.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਵਣ ਕਹਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ कुदरति कवण कहा वीचारु ॥ Kuḏraṯ kavaṇ kahā vīcẖār. How can I describe Your Creative Power?

ਵਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ਏਕ ਵਾਰ ॥ वारिआ न जावा एक वार ॥ vāri▫ā na jāvā ek vār. I cannot even once be a sacrifice to You.

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਕਾਰ ॥ जो तुधु भावै साई भली कार ॥ Jo ṯuḏẖ bẖāvai sā▫ī bẖalī kār. Whatever pleases You is the only good done,

ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥੧੯॥ तू सदा सलामति निरंकार ॥१९॥ Ŧū saḏā salāmaṯ nirankār. ||19|| You, Eternal and Formless One. ||19||

ਭਰੀਐ ਹਥੁ ਪੈਰੁ ਤਨੁ ਦੇਹ ॥ भरीऐ हथु पैरु तनु देह ॥ Bẖarī▫ai hath pair ṯan ḏeh. When the hands and the feet and the body are dirty,

ਪਾਣੀ ਧੋਤੈ ਉਤਰਸੁ ਖੇਹ ॥ पाणी धोतै उतरसु खेह ॥ Pāṇī ḏẖoṯai uṯras kẖeh. water can wash away the dirt.

ਮੂਤ ਪਲੀਤੀ ਕਪੜੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ मूत पलीती कपड़ु होइ ॥ Mūṯ palīṯī kapaṛ ho▫e. When the clothes are soiled and stained by urine,

ਦੇ ਸਾਬੂਣੁ ਲਈਐ ਓਹੁ ਧੋਇ ॥ दे साबूणु लईऐ ओहु धोइ ॥ Ḏe sābūṇ la▫ī▫ai oh ḏẖo▫e. soap can wash them clean.

ਭਰੀਐ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਪਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥ भरीऐ मति पापा कै संगि ॥ Bẖarī▫ai maṯ pāpā kai sang. But when the intellect is stained and polluted by sin,

ਓਹੁ ਧੋਪੈ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥ ओहु धोपै नावै कै रंगि ॥ Oh ḏẖopai nāvai kai rang. it can only be cleansed by the Love of the Name.

ਪੁੰਨੀ ਪਾਪੀ ਆਖਣੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ पुंनी पापी आखणु नाहि ॥ Punnī pāpī ākẖaṇ nāhi. Virtue and vice do not come by mere words;

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਣਾ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਹੁ ॥ करि करि करणा लिखि लै जाहु ॥ Kar kar karṇā likẖ lai jāhu. actions repeated, over and over again, are engraved on the soul.

ਆਪੇ ਬੀਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖਾਹੁ ॥ आपे बीजि आपे ही खाहु ॥ Āpe bīj āpe hī kẖāhu. You shall harvest what you plant.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਆਵਹੁ ਜਾਹੁ ॥੨੦॥ नानक हुकमी आवहु जाहु ॥२०॥ Nānak hukmī āvhu jāhu. ||20|| O Nanak, by the Hukam of God's Command, we come and go in reincarnation. ||20||

ਤੀਰਥੁ ਤਪੁ ਦਇਆ ਦਤੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥ तीरथु तपु दइआ दतु दानु ॥ Ŧirath ṯap ḏa▫i▫ā ḏaṯ ḏān. Pilgrimages, austere discipline, compassion and charity -

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ ਤਿਲ ਕਾ ਮਾਨੁ ॥ जे को पावै तिल का मानु ॥ Je ko pāvai ṯil kā mān. these, by themselves, bring only an iota of merit.

ਸੁਣਿਆ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਭਾਉ ॥ सुणिआ मंनिआ मनि कीता भाउ ॥ Suṇi▫ā mani▫ā man kīṯā bẖā▫o. Listening and believing with love and humility in your mind,

ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਮਲਿ ਨਾਉ ॥ अंतरगति तीरथि मलि नाउ ॥ Anṯargaṯ ṯirath mal nā▫o. cleanse yourself with the Name, at the sacred shrine deep within.

ਸਭਿ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਮੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥ सभि गुण तेरे मै नाही कोइ ॥ Sabẖ guṇ ṯere mai nāhī ko▫e. All virtues are Yours, Lord, I have none at all.

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਣ ਕੀਤੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ विणु गुण कीते भगति न होइ ॥ viṇ guṇ kīṯe bẖagaṯ na ho▫e. Without virtue, there is no devotional worship.

ਸੁਅਸਤਿ ਆਥਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਬਰਮਾਉ ॥ सुअसति आथि बाणी बरमाउ ॥ Su▫asaṯ āth baṇī barmā▫o. I bow to the Lord of the World, to His Word, to Brahma the Creator.

ਸਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਣੁ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ॥ सति सुहाणु सदा मनि चाउ ॥ Saṯ suhāṇ saḏā man cẖā▫o. He is Beautiful, True and Eternally Joyful.

ਕਵਣੁ ਸੁ ਵੇਲਾ ਵਖਤੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਕਵਣ ਥਿਤਿ ਕਵਣੁ ਵਾਰੁ ॥ कवणु सु वेला वखतु कवणु कवण थिति कवणु वारु ॥ Kavaṇ so velā vakẖaṯ kavaṇ kavaṇ thiṯ kavaṇ vār. What was that time, and what was that moment? What was that day, and what was that date?

ਕਵਣਿ ਸਿ ਰੁਤੀ ਮਾਹੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਹੋਆ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥ कवणि सि रुती माहु कवणु जितु होआ आकारु ॥ Kavaṇ sė ruṯī māhu kavaṇ jiṯ ho▫ā ākār. What was that season, and what was that month, when the Universe was created?

ਵੇਲ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ਪੰਡਤੀ ਜਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲੇਖੁ ਪੁਰਾਣੁ ॥ वेल न पाईआ पंडती जि होवै लेखु पुराणु ॥ vel na pā▫ī▫ā pandṯī jė hovai lekẖ purāṇ. The Pandits, the religious scholars, cannot find that time, even if it is written in the Puraanas.

ਵਖਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਕਾਦੀਆ ਜਿ ਲਿਖਨਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਕੁਰਾਣੁ ॥ वखतु न पाइओ कादीआ जि लिखनि लेखु कुराणु ॥ vakẖaṯ na pā▫i▫o kāḏī▫ā jė likẖan lekẖ kurāṇ. That time is not known to the Qazis, who study the Koran.

ਥਿਤਿ ਵਾਰੁ ਨਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਰੁਤਿ ਮਾਹੁ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ॥ थिति वारु ना जोगी जाणै रुति माहु ना कोई ॥ Thiṯ vār nā jogī jāṇai ruṯ māhu nā ko▫ī. The day and the date are not known to the Yogis, nor is the month or the season.

ਜਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਿਰਠੀ ਕਉ ਸਾਜੇ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ॥ जा करता सिरठी कउ साजे आपे जाणै सोई ॥ Jā karṯā sirṯẖī ka▫o sāje āpe jāṇai so▫ī. The Creator who created this creation-only He Himself knows.

ਕਿਵ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਾ ਕਿਵ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਕਿਉ ਵਰਨੀ ਕਿਵ ਜਾਣਾ ॥ किव करि आखा किव सालाही किउ वरनी किव जाणा ॥ Kiv kar ākẖā kiv sālāhī ki▫o varnī kiv jāṇā. How can we speak of Him? How can we praise Him? How can we describe Him? How can we know Him?  सिख धर्म                                                      आगे
